Shaping the market-place

| December 6, 2010

The leader of Deloitte Private, David Murray, had this to say at the launch of First 5000, held at NSW Parliament House on 20 October 2010, about why Deloitte Private decided to become involved in the initiative.

We often say things are all about the timing and in the case of First 5000 the timing of the initial expression of interest aligned with what we were doing. As JV said in the introduction, I have the pleasure of running what we call Deloitte Private which is a division of Deloitte that looks after private organisations, private entities, businesses and their owners- high networked individuals.

Deloitte Private also spans into certain elements of the listed sector as private business obviously has a very close correlation with the listed sector as many seek to list.

We established Deloitte Private in June of 2009, and it was around this time that Peter (Fritz) contacted us to say that he was looking at establishing a group called First 5000. In the past we had actually been approached by a couple of organisations but when we looked at what Peter was trying to do it was evident that the skill base that existed at Global Access Partners (GAP) in terms of developing networks and developing connection points was something which we thought would be particularly relevant.

One of the things that we are very focused on at Deloitte is connectivity. As we look towards 2015 with our own planning connectivity is a key factor that we seek out. It was shown to us that the groups of businesses that Peter was focused on don’t have a collective voice to represent them. We have seen many cases in the media, I guess the most obvious one was with the resources tax where certain elements of, not this sector but the wider sector of the resources sector, complained about not having a proper representation. So we can see that certain elements of the business community and particularly those groups in the 20 employers to 200 hundred employers bracket with 10 million dollars plus don’t always have a voice within the business community.

In addition to that the importance of innovation and the importance of achieving growth in the market place is something that again is very dear to our hearts. Because we see ourselves as quite an innovative firm we like to take ideas from the market place and spread those ideas around. When it comes to the idea of connection and innovation it is not just connecting within an organisation but it is also connecting the customers and connecting the suppliers and thereby getting innovation ideas from all sectors.

We are very proud to be part of the First 5000 because we think through this program we can help what we call shaping market place. By gathering the input of the participants of First 5000 and being a representative voice in the market place to government through institutions in terms of what is important to the organisations.
