Online plans accelerated due to COVID-19: Portner Press

| May 5, 2020

How is your business going to do things differently post COVID-19?

The COVID-19 crisis accelerated our online plans.

Portner Press is a business-to-business publisher of practical handbooks that help customers manage the legal complexities of running their workforces – core products include the Employment Law Practical Handbook and the Health & Safety Handbook.

The Employment Law and the Health & Safety Handbooks were first published in hard copy. Many of our customers are deeply attached to having their handbook on the shelf.

I understand that. There is something comforting about thumbing through the handbooks for the practical legal answers you want.

But when Portner Press was acquired by Tanda in 2019, we saw a clear opportunity to revamp the handbooks’ online presence. Tanda is a SaaS workforce management solution, so a digital future was easy to visualise.

With the lockdowns, many customers are not at work to access their hard copy handbooks right now.

The design brief for our new Employment Law Handbook and Health & Safety Handbook websites was to offer customers a clean, uncluttered user experience. We wanted the sites to promote clear thinking about the challenging issues they face.

Customer feedback on the new sites has been very positive.

There are so many benefits in having a high quality web offering. For example, we can update our content much faster online, with a significantly streamlined editorial process. The timing for our customers was spot on, given the employment and safety environment is changing so quickly.

Online, we can also be more responsive to emerging trends in what customers are searching for and viewing. We were very quick to prepare a legal pack with content that focused on working from home safely and lawfully standing down employees.

Making these changes to our business has set us up to be more productive into the future. We are better positioned than ever before to give customers the help that they need just when they will be facing great pressure to reduce their expenditure on legal advice.
