Why women should love themselves

Do you love yourself enough to ask for that pay rise? Shivani Gupta shares why it’s important to put yourself first in business.

In the 10 years I have been delivering workshops for women it is clear that the key thing most women are looking for in their busy life is balance.

The starting point for achieving balance and success in your personal life and career is to love yourself. You can’t ask people to love you or your work if you don’t love it yourself. (Love yourself and maybe everyone else’s love isn’t as important).

There are four areas of focus that will give you the most benefit. Learn to love yourself in your work and relationships, learn to love your body as well to nurture your soul.

The Journey, I Love Myself is a very intense but powerful one day workshop I run to help women who don’t have a lot of time to find practical ways to achieve more balance in their lives in these four areas.

When you love yourself you help to make sure that you are not the barrier to achieving your goals. You start to be able to break recurring negative patterns. You start to be a hero and not a victim, taking charge of your life rather than waiting for things to happen.

When you love yourself it is easier to learn to relax and get some important “me time”. You learn to say “no” and not be subordinate to others. Saying “me first” sometimes is not selfish. In the safety demonstration on a plane they sensibly tell you to put your own oxygen mask on first before helping others. You can be a better partner, mother, business woman and friend if you help yourself too.

When you love yourself you get clear on what you are worth and take steps to be paid appropriately, without guilt. It helps you to market yourself, which is essential in business and community life.

When you love yourself it is easier to learn new communication styles, be more assertive, deal with challenging people and let unhelpful emotion go.

Do you love yourself enough?
