Counting on U – mental health support

| April 27, 2021

Counting on U is an Australian-wide, workplace mental health, and relationship-building intervention, that aims to provide training to business advisors to better support the needs of small-to-medium (SME) business owners.

Mental illness is the single biggest cause of disability in Australia and SME owners are a vulnerable population that is often difficult to reach through traditional health services. A recent study commissioned by the Federal Department of Industry, Science, Energy, and Resources, reports that nearly 1 in 3 SME owners had experienced stress, depression, or anxiety in the past 12 months.

In response to these concerns, it has been identified that business advisors (e.g. accountants, bookkeepers, financial planners, and insolvency experts) are in a unique position to provide mental health support to SMEs.

Deakin University, along with our partner organisations, is therefore offering business advisors the opportunity to enrol in a course, that integrates mental health first aid with relationship-building training. Normally costing up to $337 plus GST, this course will be free to eligible participants.

We can help you can learn the skills to promote and protect the mental health and wellbeing of your SME clients, whilst taking care of your mental wellbeing in the process.

Counting on U is jointly funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and the Federal Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources (DISER), alongside our partner organisations Beyond Blue, Worksafe Victoria, Mental Health First Aid Australia, and the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA).
