Brisbane Lord Mayor launches new business awards

| July 5, 2019

Micro and social enterprises are among the Brisbane businesses encouraged to nominate for the new-look 2019 Lord Mayor’s Business Awards.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said for the first time in the Awards’ 14-year history, two new categories would recognise the contribution that micro businesses and social enterprises make to Brisbane’s economy and community.

“The Lord Mayor’s Business Awards elevate the best and most innovative businesses and people in Brisbane,” Cr Schrinner said.

“In the spirit of supporting the growth and sustainability of Brisbane businesses, I’m delighted to introduce two new categories for those that deserve to be in the spotlight.

“Two years ago, we introduced the Award for Outstanding Small Business, which became one of the most popular categories.

“Given around 88 per cent of businesses in Brisbane employ less than five people, the new Award for Outstanding Micro Business has been created to separately recognise the impact of these businesses that touch all of our lives.

“In addition, the new Award for Outstanding Social Enterprise will recognise businesses that are making a significant social impact, regardless of company size, by tackling social problems and improving our communities or environment.”

Cr Schrinner encouraged all businesses and business people to consider nominating across the nine business categories and two individual categories.

“Many successful and innovative businesses call Brisbane home, and I urge those that are helping to raise the profile of Brisbane, build our economy and enrich our social fabric to nominate,” Cr Schrinner said.

“Past winners have gone on to achieve greater levels of professional and personal success and make valuable new connections within Brisbane’s dynamic business community.”

Nominations close 19 July with winners to be announced at a gala dinner ceremony at City Hall on 18 October.
