NT China ready online training program launch

| January 4, 2019

The Territory Government has launched an online Chinese cultural and tourism training program for tourism operators aimed at preparing the industry for future Chinese arrivals.

Tourism is one of the Territory’s key economic drivers generating valuable jobs and income for the Territory. China is a focus for development and the NT Government’s goal is to achieve 30,000 visitors from China by 2020.

Department of Tourism and Culture Acting CEO, Andrew Hopper said the online training module would allow accommodation providers, attractions, retailers, restaurants and related tourism sectors to provide consistent, quality service that today’s modern Chinese traveller expects.

“The Territory Government acknowledges that the quality of our experiences and customer service is paramount to the level of enjoyment visitors have in the Territory,” Mr Hopper said.

“This online service will help Tourism operators improve their level of service to this new market of visitors, which will in turn build our reputation as an exciting, vibrant place to visit with Chinese travellers.

“The training module is supported by $2,000 grants for eligible businesses to implement Chinese resources from menus, welcome letters, brochures or safety information.”

Developed by China Ready and Accredited, the online training program will be offered to employees in the Department of Tourism and Culture as well as organisations including Tourism Top End, Tourism Central Australia, Darwin City and Waterfront Retailers Association and Hospitality NT whose members will more than likely have a high level of interaction with Chinese visitors.

The online training consists of twelve modules covering hospitality, tourism products and markets, rating systems in the tourism industry and China tourism law.

The program is the only one of its kind recognised by the China National Tourism Administration and leading Chinese travel industry bodies.

Darwin Trailer Boat Club Marketing Manager, Simona Paganetto has highlighted the importance of being China Ready.

“The cultural differences that exist between Australia and China are significant, so being equipped to cater for Chinese tourists will enable our business to offer diversified products and services,” Ms Paganetto said.

“We have implemented China Union Pay to enable our Chinese visitors a hassle-free experience when paying and have obtained chopsticks for guests as requested.”

Uluru Segway Tours Business Manager Brent Carraill said the China Ready Workshop has really helped the business.

“As a direct result of the workshop Uluru Segway Tours is now an accredited China Ready Business,” Mr Carraill said.

“Our brochures, website and instruction sheets have all been translated into Mandarin and we now offer a GPS triggered audio guide of Uluru translated for Chinese tourists.”

Eligible individuals who complete the online training program by 31 January 2019 will go into the draw to win a travel package to Shenzhen on Donghai Airlines.
