Australian App economy provides employment opportunities

| July 31, 2014

Australia is experiencing strong job creation as a result of the App boom, according to research from US based Progressive Policy Institute (PPI).

The Australian App Economy employed roughly 140,000 workers as of June 2014 with New South Wales leading the way with 77,000 App Economy jobs.

“Australia stacks up well against the United States and the United Kingdom when it comes to App Economy employment per capita,” Dr Michael Mandel, Jobs in the Australian App Economy report author said.

“As this sector continues to expand globally, this opens up new opportunities for Australia to become an exporter of apps and app-related services, especially given the current international importance of English-language markets.

“We see that Australia compares favorably with both the United States and the United Kingdom, having a slightly higher proportion of core App Economy jobs as a share of all ICT jobs.

“Perhaps more interesting, Sydney and Melbourne are roughly on par with New York City and London. The San Francisco-Silicon Valley region, of course, is far ahead,” he said.

Mandel noted that because apps are exportable the Australian App Economy can become a basis for continued growth.

“App development offers an accelerated route to the development of the digital economy,” Mr Mandel said.

“The App Economy is a logical complement to Australia’s natural resources industries, especially for a country that can harness strong universities and desirable amenities such as quality of life and ease of recreation.”

Launching the paper Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull said demand for Apps continues to grow and there is a limited role for government.

“The best we can do is provide no obstacles for private businesses,” Mr Turnbull said.
“In the coming months the government will release a new cloud computing policy and we will remove barriers to procure cloud services.”
